Tax Deadlines for 2026 — Every Date Tennessee Business Owners Need to Know
Missing a tax deadline doesn't just mean a late fee — it can mean penalties, interest, and unnecessary stress. We've seen Tennessee business owners get hit with penalties of 5%, 10%, even 25% of their tax bill simply because a date slipped by. Here's your complete 2026 tax calendar. January 2026: The Year Kicks Off Strong
January is one of the busiest months on the tax calendar. You're wrapping up the prior year while also making your first moves for the new one.
January 15 is when your Q4 2025 estimated tax payment is due (Form 1040-ES). If you didn't pay enough throughout 2025, this is your last chance to minimize underpayment penalties.
January 31 is a big one — this is the deadline to get W-2s to your employees and 1099-NEC forms to any contractors you paid $600 or more. It's also when your Q4 2025 payroll tax return (Form 941) and your annual federal unemployment tax return (Form 940) are due. Miss the 1099 deadline and you're looking at $50-$280 per form in penalties, depending on how late you are.
March 2026: Business Returns Start Coming Due
March 16 (technically March 15 falls on a Sunday, so it shifts to Monday) is the deadline for S-Corp returns (Form 1120-S) and partnership returns (Form 1065). These are due a month before individual returns so that K-1s can be issued to owners in time for their personal filings.
If you're not ready, file an extension — but remember, an extension to file is not an extension to pay. Estimate what you owe and pay it by this date to avoid penalties.
April 2026: The Main Event
April 15 is the date everyone knows. Individual income tax returns (Form 1040), C-Corp returns (Form 1120), Q1 2026 estimated payments, and Tennessee franchise and excise tax returns are all due. It's also your last day to make 2025 IRA and HSA contributions.
This is where having a CPA who does year-round tax planning pays off. If you're scrambling in April, you've already missed most of your opportunities to reduce your tax bill. The best tax planning happens in October and November of the prior year.
June 2026: Mid-Year Check-In
June 15 brings your Q2 2026 estimated tax payment. By this point, you should have a good sense of how the year is shaping up. If business is stronger than expected, you may need to increase your estimated payments to avoid an underpayment penalty in April 2027.
This is also a good time to schedule a mid-year tax planning meeting with your CPA. Six months of actual data makes projections much more accurate.
September 2026: Extension Season Ends
September 15 is when Q3 2026 estimated taxes are due. It's also the final deadline for extended S-Corp and partnership returns. If you filed an extension in March, this is your last chance — there are no extensions beyond this date for these entity types.
October 2026: Final Deadlines
October 15 is the extended deadline for individual returns (Form 1040) and C-Corp returns (Form 1120). It's also when extended Tennessee franchise and excise tax returns are due. After this date, you're officially late, and penalties start accumulating.
December 2026: Year-End Planning
December 31 is your last opportunity to make tax-deductible purchases, charitable donations, and retirement contributions that will count for 2026. It's also the deadline for Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) from retirement accounts if you're 73 or older.
Smart business owners use December to accelerate deductions, defer income when appropriate, and set themselves up for a smoother tax season. This is when we're busiest with year-end tax planning calls.
Don't Forget Tennessee Sales Tax
Tennessee sales tax returns are filed monthly (if you collect more than $400/month) or quarterly. Check your filing frequency with the Tennessee Department of Revenue. Late sales tax filings carry a penalty of 5% per month, up to 25% — and unlike income tax, you're holding the state's money, so they take it seriously.
